war toys / practice tape 2-2-84 /

 war toys - practice tape 2-2-84 (tape c60 s/s self-released)
usually im gonna try to post only stuff with more info possible..here i should buy the Ian Glasper's anarchopunk book but i don't have any money to spend...(20 euro for an anarchopunk book it should be for free..). They were from North Devon and they belong to the anarchopunk scene. This tape is amazing...yea i like it a lot...Anarchopunk is really cool when they weren't play punk stuff but they experiments with other genre (just to think about Hit Parade, Annie Anxiety, This Bitter Lesson or Youth in Asia ..few names). War Toys were a charming post-punk band, great melodies and such emotional...They use a lot of melanconic guitar riff...and anthemic vocals in a goth way. 'Pain and Strife' is one of that track i could listen to death. And 'Pandean Pipedream'? the same...amazing..They remind me some U.S. skate-band with post-punk touch..(mc rad - weakness..sort of)...I will call this stuff Romantic-Anarchopunk...

seite A: 1. Pain and Strife, 2. The Short War, 3. Great Escape, 4. Pandean Pipedream, 5. Where's the Logic, 6. Golden Gate, 7. Unexcusable Situation, 8. In Perspective, 9. Outcry

katharsis / live at the 455 / 1988

katharsis - live at the 455 (tape 1988 SSS Productions sss16)
Katharsis was a band from San Francisco, formed by: Daniel Malson , Jano Sanguine , Mary Andre and Tim Vickers (from 1988). Daniel Malson also got a side project: Bast, that released a tape through The Happiest Place on Earth. Here we find a tape each side got a different live recording but both at the same place the 455 gallery in SF.
Side-a was recorded in october 1987. I don't know if the photo of the cover is the real band...hovewer Katharsis are an industrial band with punk attitude, is more in the power electronics vein, they don't have a lot of percussion..zero percussive..it's only about the fatness of the noise sound..the thickness, about the low frequencies. 'Imitate' is the best track. 'Fate' the most post-punk, 'Hostile Witness' the punkest, 'My father's Dead' the scariest...
Released on the Pittsburgh based label: SSS Production.
seite A / Live 10/17/1987: 1. Intro, 2. Imitate, 3. My Father's dead, 4. Fruits of Toil, 5. End
seite B / Live 1/29/1988: 1. Hostile Witness, 2. Just Passina.., 3. ..Through, 4. Leviathan, 5. Fate

chris zygomalas / white-black / c30 / 1984

Χρήστος Ζυγομαλάς (Chris Zygomalas) - Άσπρο-Μάυρο (White-Black) (c30 1984)
From Athen, Greece this tape 1984 by Chris Zygomalas (vocals, guitar) and Mr. Simitis (vocals, synthesizers). Really obscure stuff here but very cool. Greece put out a lot of interesting stuff. This tape could be described as greek minimal-wave, with a little touch of ethnic sound and with superb synth-pop riff.
The a-side start with a drum-machine 'Τι νέα απ' τον πλανήτη' an electro ballad, quiet nice but maybe i don't have the right greek background...the second track got the same style in a gloomy ethereal way..and 'March' is a funny synth-rumental piece. On the b-side 'Άσπρο - Μάυρο' is another minimal-wave ballad..to 'Ode' without any doubt the best song here, the synth-line and the double vocals make this track one of deepest minimal-synth tune i've head in the last time. Then the b-side ended with 'Wind' based on a winded synth sound...

seite A: 1. Τι νέα απ' τον πλανήτη (What's new from the world ), 2. Μικρή θεά (Little goddess), 3.
Εμβατήριο (march)
seite B: 1.  Άσπρο - Μάυρο (black-white), 2. Ωδή (ode), 3.  Άνεμος (wind)
the tape could be find here. with some info about the project.

various / music for the sloth / c60 / 1988

various - Music for the sloth (yape c60 1988 Nailed to sound CS-001)
First release for the Nailed to Sound, Delawares label, founded by the electro-industrial act Batz Without Flesh. It's compiled by Claude Willey, singer and composer of BWF, and included bands or project that was going to be featured on the new label.
BTF open the tape with a slow industrial-rock bomb 'Sinking platfom', then we find a shorter version of 'Repairs' by Daniel Burke's noise project Illusion of Safety, already released by Sound of Pig. The third track is a killer industrial-rock song by Spit [aka Vinnie Spit], with taped vocals about profit and business over a ground of metal rhythm percussion and damaged guitar chord, a cyberpunk gem. Bobs Strauss and Sloth (BTF guitarist) closed the side with two experimental tracks.
The b-side is more rhythmic with the funky-industrial weirdo shit of Smersh, an obscure electro ballad by 911 and a groundbreaking techno-ebm track by Sinister Attraction. BTF and Crowded Krypt delight us with bleeding industrial-rock stuff while The Torture Fence close the tape with an ambient noisy suite.

seite A: 1. Batz Without Flesh - Sinking Platform, 2. Illusion of Safety - Repairs, 3. Spit - Profit, 3a. unknow artist - hidden track, 4.  Bob Strauss - Release, 5. Sloth - Concerto No. 73 Four Guitars
seite B: 1. Smersh - The Nether Master, 2. 911 - Always Watching, 3. Sinister Attraction - Fragment Onslaught, 4. Batz Without Flesh - Disturbing Trend, 5. Crowded Krypt - Study In Black, 6. The Torture Fence - Ramification

body & the buildings / st / 1982

body & the buildings - body and the buildings (tape 1982 Heute mc 82092 st)
from Altusried , Bayern this is I believe their second tape (the first is 1981).
The members should be Richy Richter (drums, vocals), Manfred Faltin (guitar, vocals) and Faller (bass) [maybe also Schorch Vorgessen but i'm not sure]. The sound is changed from the dull punk first tape, in better. This is one of the few german bands that's got an international sound...they sounds like an english or an american band. This tape's got a straight post-punk attitude. Minimal and emotional song structure on a solid bass-drum rhythm ground fixed with existentialism / asocial lyrics. Fresh post-punk, simple but straight!

seite A: 1. This is normal they say, 2. Keep you down
seite B: 1. Dance dance, 2. Another song, 3. Empty faces, 4. No Voices

you can find the tape over this holy-grail blog.

candidate + gangrene / split / c30 1985

 candidate + gangrene - split (tape c30 1985 permis de construite pdc001)
Two Nancy's [Lorraine, France] bands split this tape. They are Gangrene and Candidate (they still play). It's their first release and the first release for Permis de Construire label [26 rue St. Julien, Nancy Lorraine]. The two bands sounds similar, a combinations of minimal-synthesizers and rhythm machine with guitar, sometimes poppy but always punk-attitude and electronic-experiment. Candidate stuck us with syncopatic and alienated songs to ended with a fine and sweet song. Esotic and dissonant at the same time.
Gangrene are definitively more obscure and creepy, the fifth track is in a typical french-synth way like Neva or Bocal 5, the second track is real synth-punk madness and the track with male-vocal is a fuzzy residents-soul gem.
Candidate formed in 1983 by Cécile (vocals, keyboards) and Bidou (guitar) [who also played with Geins't Naït]. Gangrene were: Johnny Ravio (guitar), Annie (vocals, electronics) and R.X Poirot (vocals, electronics) [who also played with Geins't Naït]. They later release another split in vinyl 7'' format edited by Permis de Construire / Dum Dum, and they both appears on 'Nancy Compilation' lp 1986. Later Candidate released others stuff on vinyls.

seite A / Candidate : 1. Oasis, 2. Like a beast, 3. Hero.o 4. Twilight, 5. Strange girl
seite B / Gangrene : 5track

two felipes / eat your fill / 1986

two felipes - eat your fill (c60? 1986 Flaming Cow Productions)
Astonishing wacky tape by this weird zolo high-school band from Milwakee, WI. They little remember freaky stuff like Zoogz Rift or Fuck Off related lo-finess...The retarded mongo style of some songs (Fried eggs, Mark Trail..) remind a wild version of Residents. At the end there's a large use of chep keyboards...(the infamous vl-1 tone)...
The dada non-sense lyrics, the large use of saxophone, the gross vocals, amatorial recordings ..this is a real art-punk tape gem.

Members: Dan Vebber (vocals), Steve Marchese (bari saxophone), Kris Desch (alto sax), Karl Desch (keyboards), Jay Tollefsen (percussion)

Tracklist: Frijole, Spit, Bealsa-Bop, Even Steven, Stupid Cottage, Rick the Drunk, Headache, Agenls of dog, Explosive Enemas, Kahn's, Industrial Strife, Simian, The Poopsnack, Fried Eggs, You're a Bird, Hot Cross Buns, Evil Robyn, Mark TRail, Mountain Man, Fish

the event group / st / c30 / 1981

 the event group - untitled (c30 1981? self-released) (UK)
It was a performace band, the main person behind were Tom Castle and Michael Jones helped by tons of other members or collaborator (see their myspace). They played at Futuruma and became residents at Cabaret Futura, with their multi-media performance.
The music here is incredible, 'Lost in Bass' is a weirdo funky tune, based on a wacky bass-riff and an hypnotic demented synth-line. 'Run Out' is an ambient experiment with looped vocals on a percussive marble..'Concussion' a 10 minute suite is like somebody get lost with a piano on a primitive jungle...
The members who played in this tape are: Tom Castle, John Marc Cowans, Phil Hyde, Michael Jones, Ronald Keefe and David Revelle (also bassist in obscure post-punker Mandible Rumpus).

Different colour sleeve.
seite A:  1. Lost in bass, 2. Run Out (They've got Johnny)
seite B: 1. Wooster's club, 2. Concussion

plx 15 / from ritual to romance / c15 / 1986

PLX 15 - From Ritual to Romance (c-15 1986/ Requiem Productions REQ 333)
little tape released by this wacky norvegian minimal-synth outfit, and distributed by Requiem Productions.
Plx 15 formed in 1983 as SRD and later becom De Pravity, in 1985 changed the name in PLX 15: formed by Jon Hveding (guitar, synthesizer, rhythm box..) and Remi Langmo (vocals, synthesizers). In 1985 they recorded a 3-track demotape from it, was taken 'Lufteturen' and released on 'Psychomania' belgian vinyl compilation. When Lars Nicolaysen join the band they released 'From ritual to romance' in 1986 with Petter Pogo as producer and additional guitar.
'Amen' is a nice retarded minimal-synth ballad, while 'Much too soon..'' an instrumental synth-pop danceable tune in the Plx 15 way obviously...On the b-side 'De sterke (The strong)' bring us into the cold norvegian fields with it's post-punk attitude.

seite A: 1. Amen, 2. Much Too Soon When You're Tied Up
seite B: 1. De Sterke

various - nightsoil 5 futurists? / c60 / 1981

various - Night$oil 5 Futurists? (tape 8-1-1981 Fingers in the Dike / For those Chaos Breweries Tapes // Hole 005, CBT 03)

inside this paper bag, comes the Nightsoil 5 futurists? compilation tape along with a poster with some information. It's a very obscure and experimental tape. Released by Sheffield's label: Chaos Breweries Tapes in association with Fingers in the Dike (Breukelen, Netherlands). In the poster notes they talked about Nightsoil 3,6 and 4..did they really exists? and what about  Chaos Breweries CBT 01 and 02? two possibilities...here lacks a lot of info..or it's a kind dadaistic non-sense catalogue. And how about a dutch label distributed this wacky sheffield's stuff? but is also true that Fingers in the Dike first release is a split between Pitfall (NL) and the english Six Minute War.

Side A contains bands from UK while the b-side got bands only from Sheffield. The tape range from the experimental noise of Ben Allen, Kable Truth, Datonik Poko, Panacea and Secret People, to the synth-punk of Loss of Head, from the minimal-synth of Der Fliessigs Feilän to the weird-wave of Rentakil D. Influences of Residents and early industrial could be hear. This tape sounds like some punks crashed into electronic experiments.

Some info:
Rentakil D. were: S.i. Robertson, D. Smallwood, D.j. Roper; they split in march 1981 to form An Ordered Life.
Panacea: Kris Duncan  C/O 14 Arranview Street Chapelhall, Airdrie, Lanarkshire Scotland
Loss of Head: C/O 2 Stanhope Drive Horsforth, Leeds. They released also 'Dead at the Control' c45 15 track.

K.U.K.L. / À Paris 14.9.84 / 1985

 K.U.K.L. - A' Paris 14-9-84 (tape july 1985 V.I.S.A. rf 003)
Cassette of the live concert by K.U.K.L. at Eldorado, Paris, France on September 14, 1984.

For those who doesn't know..K.U.K.L. was a band from Reykjavík, Iceland, and was one of the first band of now worldwide famous Bjork (previously also in Tappi Tíkarrass). The band released 2 lps for the CRASS records and the first single in 1983 for Gramm (Iceland's post-punk label). This tape was recorded live, distributed by the french tape (mostly) label V.I.S.A. (cat. Rebel Flux 003). This tape is great. It's 40 minutes of concert, they played all their songs recorded on vinyls, angry post-punk, always so articulated, dissonant, that couldn't be simply described as punk even if the angry strenght is the same. Think about a strange mix of B52's and UK Decay...

seite A: 1.Seagull, 2. Moonbath, 3. Gibraltar (Copy Thy Neighbour), 4. France (A Mutual Thrill), 5. Greece (Just By The Book), 6. The Spire
seite B: 1.Anna, 2. Dismembered, 3. Vials of Wrath, 4. Latent, 5. Pökn For Beginners
(members: Björk Guðmundsdóttir (vocals), Einar Örn Benediktsson (vocals, trumpett), Guðlaugur Kristinn Óttarsson (guitar), Birgir Mogensen (bass), Einar Arnaldur Melax (keyboards), Sigtryggur Baldursson (drums))

The tape could be found on the cool Kill Your Pet Puppy blog, as two mp3 side 1 and 2.

various artists - Annoy Your Neighbor With This Tape! (tape 1982 audio issue of Chainsaw fanzine)
Chainsaw was a punk fanzine produced at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania  in the early Eighties by George Smith (formerly of Senseless Hate) and his girlfriend. Here you can find out all the info...of course cos is george smith's blog..

Suburban Menace - Skateboard Zone, 20. Blight - Prophet of Doom, 21. Russian Meatsquats - Society Sucks, 22. Attrition - Dilemma

The tape is mostly punk. we have the cool skate-punker Angry Samoans with two tracks (that could be found also on their first lp), the Idaho punkers Spyke Haytrid, the whole 7'' of the Cracked Actor from NY and 4 furios hardcore songs by candian Suburban Menace.
Alongside these punkers  we have some legendary noise act: the nerd pranksters SMERSH with 3 songs (later or previously on 'Noise Ding Don'), amazing as usual, acid synth-punk, apocalypse of rhythm machine and distorted sounds. The SENSLESS HATE delight our ears with their delicate touch..ultra harsh noise rock...'Prophet of Doom' by BLIGHT is another proof of good acid punk with the right equalization of distorted sound. To close the tape...ATTRITION from uk...great industrial synthetized song.
Punk Not Profit ripper the tape here.

various / canoë 1 / c40 / 1983

various artists - Canoë 1 (fanzine 25 sheet A4 + compilation tape c40) (year: 1983)
I'm gonna to present you the number 1 of the french cassette-magazine Canoë. As you can see is composed by a black box with inside the fanzine's sheet and the tape.

I've found also that there was different cover of the k7..

This one is very different from the other (that has mainly the same graphic but a different picture) and i found it on ebay...the user is selling the tape-only...without the box and the fanzine.

This is the inner sleve of the tape with the tracklist:
seite A: 1.Clair Obscur - Froh, 2.Un Department - Kumul part.I, 3. Lucrate Milk - Nepla Relou, 4. The Tempest - Lady Left This, 5. The Tempest - Hey Sister, 6. Ring Andersen - Sex Sexy Banzai
seite B: 1.Un Department - Kumul part. II, 2. Lucrate Milk - La Cloche, 3. Lucrate Milk - Stab Your Back, 4. Lucrate Milk - Cancer L'Amour, 5. The Tempest - Obscenity, 6. Clair Obscur - Dead End, 7. Clair Obscur - Hibernation
You can find this tape ripped here on Art of Losing blog.
The Clair Obscur 's stuff is very nice, obscure dark post-punk in a classic way: 'Froh' is an inedited track, 'Dead End' could be found also inside the 'Ritual Dos Sadicos' comp. tape and 'Hibernation' on their first tape 'Cassette Noir' ...maybe not so original stuff but a very pleased listen. Un Department were from Orleans (Loiret), we found here two tracks, part I and II, recorded live..very different from their vinyl stuff(minimalsynth art/rock in a residentesque way), these tracks are sick slow post-punk, angry and frightening. The Tempest was one of the many projects of the english (Northampton, London) Alex Novax (in bands also with Venus Fly Trap, Religious Overdose and many others)...i don't  like a lot these tracks...too much rock for me...Then there's, as the cover say, special guest, Ring Anderson, with a nice synth-pop song. Last but not least..Lucrate Milk (from Paris)...that's one of my favourite band ever...with 4 killer tracks live, no-wavy art-punk stuff. demented and genius at the same time..

Other issue of  Canoë were:
- Canoë zero : k7 with bela kis, crimee, odessa swing, souvenir de paris, latin go
- Canoë Video Tape
included video from Lucrate Milk, Latin Go, Clair Obscur, Un Departement, Nini Raviolette, Venise, Orchestre Rouge
- Canoë 2 (no info found)
 - Canoë 3 (fanzine 60 sheet A4 + compilation tape) (year: april 1985)

on the scanned artwork of the canoë 1 posted by Art of Losing, Canoë talked about 2 really obscure tape:
- various - when the dixie stars are playing peek a boo (c60, 15 tracks, camera obscura)
amazingly is added on discogs database
- various - jojo's tape axe i (c30, 12 tracks)
with 3 bands from bremen: Foltergarde, Guki and Jojo...
